The Meaning of One

A few days ago, we were talking about the project. It's been almost a year since we released our album. Much has changed in the time since, but there are reasons to be hopeful. Our conversation moved to the meaning of one. Outside of friends and family, we know of one person that has discovered us on their own, taking the time to like and listen to our music. That one person is enough.

As creators, it's a mistake to fall into the trap of measuring just because there's been a shift to metrics. Metrics don't measure heart. They don't measure emotions. They don't measure change. All of those things are soft and subjective. Most of all, as creators that's not why we do it in the first place. If the purpose was to make money, there's never been a better time to be a creative with a desk job. It's waiting along with safety. Ubiquitous and abundant.

On the other hand, the opportunity to make meaning, even if it's just for one person, that's rare. It's a privilege that few will experience. That chance to matter is what we seek.

Mixed Messages / Reflections Day 2

August 29.

It's still overcast today. I'm still trying to shake the clouds, but feeling more confident than ever. It feels like a prelude for winter. At least the space is kind enough to ease us into the winter season. By giving us a reminder here or there, it ensures that the change won't be as difficult. I appreciate that act of kindness.

In an hour, we will work on the album. If all goes well, part of a song will begin to explain itself. If we're lucky, we will get a verse or chorus. This is the fun part. Ideas flow and energy combines in the art making process. It's all about addition and love. Soon, reality will hit and we will need to subtract, to critique, and to question what we were thinking in our early sessions. Soon, we will be on a deadline, racing the clock, trying to do our best to get to the center of a feeling. For now, we aren't going to focus on what's to come. We will take the two hours of revival, the two hours of imagination. We will let them set our hearts on fire.
